MOTFG isn't a Shaw Brothers film, it was made by First Films after Jimmy Wang Yu had left Shaw Brothers.

Other than that, great review of a wonderful, wonderful movie.

I agree with what you are saying in this review to a certain extent. However, I tend to think about the mechanics that went into the production of this film. The most creative filmmakers are the ones that have layered meanings. I agree that Petit was a narcissist and never thought about anyone else but himself. I knew that once the girlfriend said it was clear that he was following his dreams and that she was along for it. Never once did he ask her what she wanted to do with her life, she explains. That's why I think Marsh does an excellent job in creating this exaggerated, dramatic approach to his obviously embellished account of the story. In little ways, Marsh brings the tension growing between the people who helped him by showing them very monotoned and an absence to a current relationship between them and Petit. Especially, Jean-Louis. Anyway, I have to write an analysis on this for my class, so I shouldn't be commenting here right now, but thats my two cents.

It's not the “showman” I see but whatever it takes to step so far out of the norm – to overcome the fear. The cops didn't know what to do with him because he succeeded and was in no way self-destructive. We tend to compartmentalize ourselves and find our various niches in life. His life choice was way out there but not so much different from those in other extreme sports –ski jumping, rock climbing, sky diving, racing cars, etc. Of course, they are egotistical too, but so what? I have no anger towards them or urge to place them with the modest and the mundane.

With people like Kath here making apologies for Petit's reckless and self-destructive behavior, perhaps the part of the story having to do with the groupie sex really wasn't made up after all. It still comes across as unsubstantiated horseshit, but now I understand that there are those who can only see the showman on the wire and not the egotistical asshole inside.

What is the problem here? We all live our lives and make our choices along the way. Phillipe worked most of his life to perfect his skill and went totally out of the bounds most of us live in. He hurt no one and thrilled many. I think it's absolutely fascinating. Too bad you feel so much anger and rigidity.

Oh man ....finally. Someone gets that this guy was a sociopath wanting to commit the perfect crime...get away with doing something illegal and then get famous for it. He fits the DSM IV criteria for sociopathy to the letter. No remorse, no thought to how others would be affected...people are used to achieve a goal and then cast away. Joy in deceit and manipulation.

Yes...either the guy had balls OR has sociopathy. A sociopath DOESN'T have the normal response to danger/fear the rest of us do. They get a kick out of getting away with what other people can't or won't. Rules are meant to be broken. Anyways...it was an interesting film to me and I highly recommend it to students seeking an account of a sociopath's way of thinking.

It sounds exactly like the plot of True Grit (Jeff Bridges was on meth the whole time, actually—watch it again).

Watching it (and listening to the overblown soundtrack trying to make up for the utter lack of anything actually happening on the screen) was almost as annoying as reading the overblown reviews. Is somebody's mother getting people to log in and say "wow".

Thank you, Mr. McCormick, for writing something sensible in the face of this documentation of Le Petit Man and his high wire yet low brain achievement. I mean, really not one fucking critic had anything bad to say about this piece of shit? I can't believe it. How could anyone take this joke of a film seriously? I laughed out loud at the over dramatization, I held my face in my hands at the ego masturbation, and I was beside myself at the fact that anyone would glorify such pointless subject for 90 fucking minutes. Kudos dear critic for making sense.

You got me dead to rights, Kruzak. I forgot that only intelligent people would swallow this pabulum and beg for more. If you're inspired by Petit's lunacy, by all means feel free to do something equally reckless and stupid.

Rob, I'm torn. On one hand, people are finding our site. On the other hand, they seem to be ignorant dipshits like the fellow above.
