Genres, Shmenres

If the categories have confused you, here’s a handy dandy decoder to figure out what the devil we mean:

All Honky Capers: Crime films involving white people and the women that love them.

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID: Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Category Descriptions: We elaborate on these “genres,” with a little bit of film history and heavy dose of bias. Always a work in progress.

Dulce Et Decorum Est: War films.

Failed Message Movies: Films that were supposed to have some sort of moral or theme, but utterly failed in that delivery.

Have Flying Guillotine, Will Travel: Martial arts films.

Jive Turkey Theater: Blaxploitation and other films that Stick It To The Man. The counterpoint to All Honky Capers.

Must Be Drunk: Films best seen while inebriated, preferably with lower-priced booze.

Non-Cutesy Animation That Doesn’t Suck: Cartoons that don’t induce diabetes; mostly anime and “adult” cartoons.

O3: Overated, Overhyped, and Onanisitic: Self-indulgent critical darlings that actually suck if you examine them more closely.

Psychedlic Freakout: Films involving drugs, drug users, hallucinations, and other assorted visuals.

Real Life, But Edited: Documentaries.

Sexy Time: Films with one-track minds. Well, I never!

Soulless CGI Showcase: Films that rely on special effects rather than like, a good story or acting.

The Acid West: Spaghetti, Revisionist, and Psychedelic Westerns, as well as these films’ predecessors.

The Glorious Nihilism of the 1970s: Featuring New Hollywood and other experimental films of the Golden Age of Movies, 1970-1979.

The Horror, The Horror!: Horror films.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Yakuza: Japanese crime films.
